WOOD ENERGY FAIR 2004 -  Lons le Saunier (France) Vuesalon

When it was first launched in 1998, there had never been a wood energy fair anywhere in the world and ITEBE envisaged the future development of the fair on an international and professional level, as a centre of attraction for the players in an international context.

The situation has changed a lot, the market has grown, other fairs have appeared in other countries or other regions and the WOOD ENERGY fair has found its place. The fair has developed most in the Alsace-Lorraine and Midi-Pyrénées regions.
In fact, if the supply is mainly international, the demand , for its part, is mainly local, not to say rural, as revealed by the visitor statistics. The idea of the large-scale regional fair would seem therefore to have prevailed against the original concept.
Out of 10600 visitors, 3150 were professionals, which is very gratifying, but the potential is even greater. The growth has been in the numbers of members of the public who are wood energy clients, the same clients who use 85% of wood energy in France.Inauguration

The Exhibitors
The exhibition facility in Lons has about 4050 m² of indoor and about 8000m² outdoor capacity. The result of the sale of space shows a nearly 50% occupancy rate. In view of the fact that the average for trade fairs is between 50% and 60% (for safety reasons and requirements for receiving visitors, the walkway and exit areas represent 50% of the total space available).

Putting them all together, we can count 136 wood energy equipment and service companies at the 2004 edition of the WOOD ENERGY fair in Lons le Saunier. In view of the fact that some exhibitors represent several makes, this is the equivalent of 113 stands. One should note that most of those involved in wood energy are represented in France by a shop or office which tends to „exaggerate“ the proportion of French participation.

Breakdown by activity type:
Forestry and fuel production equipment  49 exhibitors
Boilers, ancillary equipment and services 24
Stoves and insets    27
Barbecues and charcoal  1
Information and press   12
TOTAL 113

The Visitors
Visitor numbers totalled 1100 on the Thursday, 2050 on the Friday, 3150 on the Saturday and as many as 4300 on Sunday. This is a total of 10600 visitors for this the sixth in the series: visitor numbers are steady with about 30% of professionals. On the whole, exhibitors were extremely pleased with orders and contacts ranging from 20 to 50 per exhibitor: from that point of view, an exceptionally good result ! – exhibitors considered the amount of business transacted to be excellent at this fair.

Demonstrations and Trips
Working with FORETS COMTOISES, ITEBE put on a trip which had 45 participants on Friday April 2, 2004:
A visit with explanatory commentary to a shredding facility in a privately owned forest in the district of Arinthod was put on by FORETS COMTOISES: the demonstration included a self-propelled shredder by SILVATEC, removal of the wood chips by hopper tractor-trailer and containerisation of the material. This demonstration was followed by a tour of the Moirans en Montagne district heating plant, one of the European Wood Energy Trail sites: consisting of a 2 000 kW wood-burning boiler using forest chips with a 3200 m heating circuit and a 180 kW wood-burning boiler in a retirement home.

The Talks are online !! Conference
For this the sixth Wood Energy fair, ITEBE put on four days of talks for both trade and general public audiences. The subjects dealt with  current preoccupations about wood energy: the quality of fuel and equipment, the marketing of wood fuels, co-generation, the development of the industry and the  outlook for the new carbon credit market.  One thing was new: entry to the 2004 talks was free of charge and around 700 people attended over the four days. Spain’s renewables tariffs a « saviour » to all but Biomass
In Renewables Energy World – May June 2004 www.renewable-energy-world.com
Spain’s new regulation governing electricity tariffs for renewables has been hailed as a saviour by the country’swindn and solar industries and is also welcomed by small hydro operators. However, the flagging biomass industry claims unfair treatment and argues future survival depends on amended tariff levels.
The regulation offers two tariffs options, both setting earning ratres for generation over the entire life-cycle of renewables plants –a first in Spain. The first option is a fixed tariff, scheduling diminishing returns for production over the life-cycle. Rates vary for each renewables technology and are sets as a percentage of the electricity sector’s average electricity tariff, or Tarifa Media de Referencia (TMR). […]
Biomass producers calculate maximum earnings from the fixed tariff of 0,064 €/kWh. The sector claims the regulation deliberately aims at pushing biomass into the pool market, where earnings can reach 0,067 €/kWh. Renewables association “ Asociacion de Produtores de Energias Renovables (APPA) sees this as precipitous, given that the vast bulk of biomass plant in Spain, now totalling a mere 360 MW, are R&D projects. Sector hopes now lie with promises from the incoming socialist government to amend biomass rates.
A new initiative to staret a small scal wood-heating market in the East Midlands in the UK has received a grant from the National Lottery through its Social, Economic and Environmental Development (SEED) Programme. The programe will seek to help farmers produce wood chip and wood pellet fuel local for use in efficient, automatic wood-heating systems.

Trees to fire UK electricity market
In REW  n°2/7, March April 2004, p.34 www.renewable-energy-world.com

AEA Technology has just announced Biojoule, a new venture with Climate Care, specifically set up to supply wood as a renewable fuel for co-firing in coal-fired power stations. Biojoule'first production plant in east Anglia is now fully operational and producing 15 000 tonnes a year od specially processed wood. Extensive trials have enabled Biojoule to set up and patent a process to produce a dry, low-dust granular wood product that burns well and is easy to handle. Biojoule has successfully burnt this material in four power stations.
The Biojoule fuel is processed from virgin wood straight from the forest, which means that Biojoule wood is not contaminated with any waste materials, says the company. It can be delivered daily to power stations. Biojoule is working with the UK forestry industry to offer a UK-grown product, contrasting with imported fuels, which can involve transporting large quantities of unusual watses, such as olive stones or palm nut kernels, over long distances.
Marcus Gover, Managing Director of Biojoule comments " The UK electricity supply industry meet its renewable targets or face heavy fines.
Biojoule offers a viable wood fuel than can be used as a partial replacement for coal in existing coal-fired power stations. We offer generators locally grown wood fuel, processed so that it can be handled and burnt easily at the power station."
The encouragment and development of energy crops is a key part of Biojoule's strategy, and significant investments have already been made. Biojoule is currently recruiting farmers to grow coppice in the vicinity of its proposed processing sites.

ARBRE short rotation coppice goes to co-firing - UK
In Renewables Energy World – May June 2004 www.renewable-energy-world.com
The 1500 hectares of short rotation willow coppice originally planted for use in the UK’s abandoned Project ARBRE gasification scheme, in Yorkshire, are now to be co-fired in the 4000 MW Drax plant, a coal-fired plant that provides about 8% of the total electricity to England and Wales.
The contract for the delivery of 7000 or more oven-dry tonnes of biofuel was negociated by Renewable Fuels Limited, a specialist biomass fuel supply company. Managing Director Rob Smith sais that “this joint venture is the first major step in creating a real biomass industry in the UK”, and that he looks forward to a substantial growth in energy crop development.
The biomass crop will be specially processed for blending into the pulverized coal streams that feed its seix, 660 MW units. UK Governement targets require 25% of all biomass that is co-fired in 2009 to be derived from energy crops, 50% in 2010 and 75% in 2011.

New technology increases biopellet energy content - NORWAY
Norsk Pellets Vestmarka AS has developed a new technology for producing a better biopellet
Caddet InfoPoint 1/04 p.11
Biopellets are made by drying and compressing raw biofuels into ‘blocks’ with a diameter of less than 20 mm. The processes of drying and compression increase the calorific value of the biofuels compared with their untreated form. Furthermore, the biopellets can be handled using technologies similar to those used for fuel oil. As a result, they have a market in homes, in larger buildings and in district heating schemes.
When pellets are produced from wood, wood particle size is of great importance. If the particles are too large, the quality of the pellets is diminished so, in most production processes, hammer-mills or other grinding tools are used to reduce the particle size. The Vestmarka process is different in that the biomass is exposed to hot steam and high pressures in order to soften the wood and break down the fibres. This offers several benefits:
There is reduced resistance and, therefore, reduced power consumption during the subsequent pelletisation process. The finished pellets are more compact, which increases their energy content by volume. Recent tests have shown an energy content of 4.9 kWh/kg. Breaking down the fibres releases lignin, a fixing agent present in wooden materials. This alters the properties of the wood, giving the pellets firmness and compactness without the need for additional binding agents. Lignin also gives the pellets their characteristic brown colour (conventionally produced biopellets are white). The finished pellets have a harder surface, reducing the amount of dust raised during transportation and handling. The finished pellets are more resistant to water and therefore easier to store than conventional biopellets.
The Norsk Pellets Vestmarka production plant has a production capacity of 6 tonnes/hour. Actual production is currently 3 tonnes/hour. The plant is situated close to the Swedish border, allowing pellets to be distributed in both Norway and Sweden. Sweden is the biggest market for biopellets in Europe, using 550,000 tonnes/year. Norway has a much smaller market but, last winter, the Norwegian authorities sponsored the use of small-scale pellet stoves, an initiative that is expected to increase pellet use in Norway. For more information, please contact Rune Brusletto at Norsk Pellets Vestmarka (
rune@norskpellets.no).

Royal Commission says Biomass energy should be encouraged - British Pellet Club agree!
Press release. 14th May 2004
Government advisers have criticised the UK government for neglecting the way biomass could help to tackle climate change. The Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution says farm and forestry waste, specially-grown crops and urban plant trimmings could provide heat and power.
There are bureaucratic obstacles to overcome with regards to existing UK Building Regulations and definitions of fuels and appliances permitted within smokeless zones. With the formation of the British Pellet Club there is now a coherent association to focus the motivation of the industry and communicate with government offices and agencies to overcome these difficulties.
The recently published Royal Commission report has highlighted that we must take every opportunity that biomass can offer to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change. The British Pellet Club welcome their conclusion and aim to do everything in their power to pave the way for a growth in the use of wood pellet fuel.
The British Pellet Club (BPC)
is the trade association for the UK Wood Pellet Industry. The Club was formed in 2003 to promote the widespread use of wood pellet heating and to encourage excellence within the UK wood pellet industry.
The BPC is a not for profit company limited by guarantee which:

  • promotes wood pellets as a form of heating in the UK
  • is a central representative body representing the wood pellet industry to Government departments and agencies, Parliament, the European Commission and Parliament and other relevant organisations.
  • provides information to the industry and its customers to ensure high standards of fuel, appliances and installation
  • provides a forum for the exchange of non competitive information within the wood pellet heating industry

The British Pellet Club is managed by the National Energy Foundation, an educational charity promoting renewable energy and providing impartial information and advice. NEF also undertakes research and consultancy as well as projects and education.
